Structural
Capacity Evaluation
Nondestructive Testing Services
Fugro uses
a variety of nondestructive test methods (NDT) to obtain
valuable pavement data for evaluating a pavements structural
capacity.
Deflection
Testing
The
majority of deflection testing is conducted with a Falling
Weight Deflectometer (FWD). The FWD simulates the effects of
axle loads and measures the response of pavement structures to
applied loads.
Fugro operates two FHWA/LTPP FWD's on a full time basis and
operates another of its own for commercial testing projects.
Fugro also owns and operates a Dynaflect trailer. This
equipment is similar in function to a FWD but is used mainly
for lighter pavements.
Ride Quality Measurement
Surface Roughness Measurements
A profilometer is used to obtain profile measurements to
determine Pavement Serviceability Index (PSI) and
International Roughness Index (IRI) ratings. These values help
develop an indication of the pavement's ride quality.
Fugro currently operates a K.J. Law Road Profilometer on a
full time basis for FHWA. We also own and operate a California
Style Profilograph.
Our professional staff and operators are adept in analyzing
the data from the Mays Meter and other roughness devices.
Visual Distress Evaluation
Pavement Distress Surveys
Reliable pavement distress identification is an integral
part of accurate pavement evaluations.
Fugro's staff of Engineers and Technicians perform Manual
Distress Surveys on all types of pavements on a routine
basis. All Distress Surveyors are certified to ensure
uniformity and repeatability in the data collected.
Accreditation and experience encompasses procedures such as
Federal Highway Administration/LTPP DIM, American Public
Works Association Paver, and Texas Department of
Transportation PMIS.

Fugro
Consultants staff is experienced and proficient in applying
deflection data to characterize pavement structures for
evaluation and design purposes. They have also analyzed data
measured with equipment such as Road Rater, Benklemen Beam
and WES Vibrator.
Other services include: Friction measurements and data
collection, void detection using Ground Penetrating Radar and
Video edge drain inspection.
